Peru, Boliva and Brazil - 2002 - Campinas

Monday 22 July 2002

We returned to Jundiai from the beauty beaches and Ubatuba on Sunday. This morning we packed our rucksacks again and drove with Claudia and Raul to the city of Campinas, where Inger lives.

She lives by herself in a very nice house with a pool and large garden. George, her German husband died some years ago. Campinas that is located some 40 km north of Jundiai has about one million inhabitants.

It was funny to visit her house. Both Ane and I knew Inger from her visits in Denmark and now we were here. Of course this time of the year didn't pay full credit to the surroundings. It rained all day, but it was easy to imagine the summer at the pool with a nice glass of Caipirihna the local long drink mixed of Brazilian rum, lemon, sugar and water.

We were hardly arrived before we were welcomed not only by Inger, but also Gui's farther and his girlfriend. A bit later Claudia's brother Willy arrived and we all had coffee and cookies. We felt at home from the first second and profited by their helpfulness. Gui's father had already booked the night bus to Rio for us and Willy offered to drive us into the bus station late evening. We also got some advices of what to see and what to avoid when being in Rio.

Later this day we visited one of Gui's father's houses that now were fitted out as a hostel. Having some experiences in staying at hostels, we found this one to be of high standard. We also visited Willy's home and his workshop. Willy makes a living as a wood carver and his works were very well made.

At sunset most of the relatives were gone. Inger and we went into Campinas and browsed around in a mall where we also had dinner. This was a nice way to walk and talk.

I drove the car back to Ingers house as she didn't like to drive in the darkness. That went surprisingly well after some wrong turns. When you have been driving in Italy nothing really shocks anymore on the road. We just made it in time for Willy to drive us into the bus station and our trip back to Rio could take its start.

The visits at our family had been very pleasant and it was a bit pity to say goodbye to all of them. Hopefully we will return soon?
