We lived at Chip Lake for ten years, then Axel hay a chance to buy the old Universal Garage in Wildwood, from Cliff Condin. This would be about May of 1942. Dick was then seven years old and Shirley was five. With the help of my father, uncle and brother Fred, Axel converted the wood shed at the back of the garage, into living quarters. So we moved into Wildwood.
Those were very lean years and Axel had to work long and hard to pay for the garage. But finally he accomplished that too. The first winter in the garage was pretty hard. The only thing that helped through that, was the money coming in from storage. At that time there was no antifreeze and so the truckers (and there were many hauling lumber etc.) needed some place to keep their trucks warm at night. At one time Axel had as many as fourteen trucks, as well as the Greyhound bus, stored in the garage.
Then about in 1950 he decided to go into the construction business and shut down the garage, using it only to do his own repair work.
